Fashion and Pantone 2017

Another year is approaching us and it’s time to focus on what’s important: Pantone’s new Color of the Year. Last year saw two colors, Rose Quartz and Serenity, chosen to enhance the feelings of tranquility and peace. This year’s color, Greenery, is all about revival and energy from nature. As a lover of nature and a supporter of making more sustainable choices, I’m instantly a fan of this color, and it’s not just the meaning behind it. This shade of green isn’t dark and heavy like forest green or bright like the yellow-green of an apple, but it still seems vibrant and deep. Leatrice Eiseman, the Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, says it best: “Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment. Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalize, Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another, and a larger purpose.” A few selections I’ve found from Braintree Clothing, Passion Lilie, Fashion ComPassion, and Fortress of Inca show just how much fashion is committing to this color and its purpose. Second-Hand Summer Fashion

One of the main comments I’ve heard when I advocate for sustainable fashion is: “It sounds expensive.  I can’t afford that.”  It’s a reality many of us face as we determine which products to purchase and balance the checkbook.  Although sustainable fashion can have a heftier price tag and not everyone can make the time to find sales or research options, there is one solution.  Purchasing second-hand is a great way to give existing clothes a new life and as I’ve found shopping used during my various travels and temporary work has given me many wonderful wardrobe options.  And what better way to show the great finds I’ve purchased from second-hand shops this summer than on National Second-Hand Wardrobe Day?  Below you’ll see how much unique fashion options I’ve discovered over the summer at second-hand shops: Continue Reading ›

The Story of My Organic Cotton Tote

When I asked for a Raven + Lily tote for Christmas, I couldn’t have been more excited to receive it as a gift.  I always enjoy having large bags to carry with me, and not for just hauling groceries.  When I lived in Denver, I used to have multiple bags to carry everything I needed for my jobs and was always thrilled when it could fit my lunch as well.  In Chicago, a reusable grocery bag was always necessary to carry coats, jackets and umbrella for the just in case moments walking from the bus stop to work.  That’s why I was excited to see this one from Raven + Lily that is colorful, playful and was durable as well.  Just how much do I admire this tote?  I didn’t think it was possible, but after learning more about it like I have with other accessories, I appreciate it even more. The Story of Hand Block Printing

Even though Christmas was months ago, it seems like it has only been a few days since the holidays when I wear the Passion Lilie scarf I was given for a Christmas present.  I was initially drawn to the shades of emerald, mint and white with designs intertwined on my scarf, but I decided to do a closer inspection to get a better idea of how my scarf was made.  My purpose behind this is not to give attention to a specific brand or product.  Instead I find looking into the story behind an item to be just as rewarding as wearing it.  So, what did I discover about my scarf that made it different than before?  As it turns out, the elaborately printed designs meant more than a pretty interpretation of leaves as I looked at the process of hand block printing.
