Sustainable and Ethical Fashion Quotes

With 4th of July celebrations happening this past weekend, there’s been plenty of great summertime sales and products available for your next travel adventure or relaxing day on the beach.  It’s always fun to see what new styles are out there and what sales you can feast your eyes on, but before you get carried away, I’d like to share some inspirational quotes from celebrities and fashion industry leaders to get to you think more deeply about your clothes.  Is this meant to make you feel guilty about your summer purchases?  No, instead I’m sharing these ideas to get you to think about clothing beyond the price tag.  Your clothes play an important role in the environment and how our decisions affect others in the world.  To see what I mean, take a closer look at a few of these influential sustainable and ethical fashion related quotes:

“It’s really a luxury to own jewellry and gemstones.  If you’re in a position to do so, you’re fortunate.  Given that, I think it’s important to pay attention to what you’re wearing and where it came from.” —Mila Kunis, Gemfields Ambassador

“Fashion can be a universal player in protecting the planet. Fashion is certainly a huge part of everybody’s lives. You wear it every day and for some people it’s a status symbol, or a statement of how much they have spent on clothes, or it’s a means of expressing their identity and who they are.” —Pharrell Williams in Ecouterre article “Pharrell Williams: ‘Fashion Can be a Player in Protecting the Planet.'”

“Buy less. Choose well. Make it last. Quality, not quantity. Everybody’s buying far too many clothes.” —Vivienne Westwood

“I don’t want to wear something on my body that hurts the environment or the people in it. It’s hard to know what is good and what is bad on the high street and equally hard to find fashionable or youthful ethical clothing. It shocks me that even today only 1% of cotton produced in the world is Fair Trade and organic. I decided to work with People Tree to put together a collection I could be proud of in terms of both ethics and design.” —Emma Watson for People Tree

“You design while thinking of the people who work on extracting the stones, so it’s a totally different energy . . . Why should the creation of dreams and luxury turn into a nightmare for the people who are providing the raw material?”–Marion Cotillard in Ecouterre article “Marion Cotillard Designs Ethical Jewelry for Chopard”

“Call it ‘eco-fashion’ if you like, but I think it’s just common sense.” –-Livia Firth, Founder of Eco Age and the Green Carpet Challenge on Chopard’s blog

“Why do I feel so strongly that fashion is a pivotal industry to get right? Firstly because it is a full spectrum industry. It extends from the farmers that grow cotton to the women beading in ateliers, it encompasses millions of people from agriculture to the creative marketing and selling. It is also dependent on the animal kingdom and some of the most fragile ecosystems on Earth . . .”–Livia Firth in Huffington Post article “Why Fashion Should Be on the Climate Change Agenda”

I hope from these quotes you find inspiration and begin to dig into your clothes and think about how they affect you and the world.  Our purchases make a difference and they reflect our decisions about how we treat the environment and other people.  That’s something to think about the next time you’re making a purchase.

Really enjoyed the last quote by Livia Firth:

“Why do I feel so strongly that fashion is a pivotal industry to get right? Firstly because it is a full spectrum industry. I’m going to share that with my daughter, who is a fashion major and a vegetarian. I think she would enjoy this.
