Even though I’m encouraging everyone to learn how to sew during this month’s affirmation, I also understand that not everyone likes to sew or wants to sew. Not being able to sew doesn’t mean you can’t make your own accessories or take on projects from time to time. If you don’t sew, there are plenty of ways to make items for your wardrobe! As I found in my Pinterest searches for upcycling clothing, there are also many tutorials for how to make your own accessories without using a sewing needle. If you’re looking for a few ways to refresh your accessories, consider a few of my projects below.
Did you know you can make bows without ever using your sewing machine? Chic Sprinkles has a great tutorial for making bows, no sewing required. I opted to use 1” wide ribbon. With my own method, I chose to overlap the ribbon edges of the bow part in the back, held together by hot glue.
Then, I placed hot glue on one side of the centerpiece ribbon and folded it in half.
After that, I wrapped the center piece around the bow part and secured it in place with hot glue in the back.
In minutes I had bows that I attached to bobby pins. These bows don’t have to be primarily for hair décor, you could also add them to a necklace or bracelet easily.
Not only was felt affordable, but it went a long way when making accessories. Mommy Moment shows you how easy it is to make your own felt flowers in DIY No Sew Felt Flowers with Twigs. I attached a couple of flowers to bobby pins, but I plan on keeping some of the larger ones for a future necklace. I highly recommend this tutorial to help your accessories and décor go a long way!
Since I already have cording and beads from past jewelry projects, I decided to take on this simple headband and make my own additions. Using the tutorial from So Here’s My Life, I started with a simple beaded headband and afterwards I found some feather hair décor I had taken off a metal headband but had not used with any other accessories. These feather additions combined with some additional decorative knots made them an accessory I can’t wait to wear!
After looking through these projects, I hope you can see that it is possible to improve your wardrobe even if you don’t sew. You don’t necessarily need to go shopping to update your wardrobe. All you need is beads, fabric scraps, ribbon, and glue to make some great accessories!
