Indian Bijou: Traditional Craftsmanship and Modern Jewelry

If there’s one thing I take pride in, it’s celebrating cultural heritage, not only my own but the heritage and history of all cultures. Whenever I’m shopping or looking for a new addition to my personal style, I always love pieces with cultural design elements and knowing the meaning behind the designs. Making these kinds of purchases excites me to think that not only am I supporting those who make these pieces, but I am working towards preserving their traditional crafts. If you value these same things, you’ll understand my excitement when I discovered Indian Bijou. Dedicated to using traditional and sustainable production methods with quality materials, Indian Bijou’s jewelry celebrates India’s rich history and heritage.

Kissed by MoonlightIndian Bijou’s story begins with jewelry-making techniques that are nearly 5,000 years old and have been passed down through generations. These practices are done without machines and create less waste and strain on the environment and natural resources. Their current Mughal Collection uses these techniques to make ethereal floral and geometric designs based on natural symmetries. These designs and production methods are a nod to an era that valued craftsmanship and creativity.

Circle of LifeHow does Indian Bijou connect to its audience with craftsmanship of the past? By incorporating modern and contemporary elements into their designs to help artisans from their partners in Jaipur reach a larger audience. In addition to connecting to a larger marketplace, the company also pays for materials and pays upfront to ensure artisans get compensated immediately for their work. Indian Bijou sees each purchase as a connection between consumers and artisans that develops an appreciation for beauty and timeless style.

Enigmatic MysteryWhat does Indian Bijou have in mind for the future? Although the company does not have any certifications yet, it will be showcasing and selling products through Novica’s platform, an organization associated with National Geographic that aids in connecting artisans with the world marketplace.  Although the company’s current focus is jewelry, but they will be working with Ode to Earth to locate artisans who make textiles and fabrics with a 100% environmentally friendly process. With beautiful designs, a commitment to traditional craftsmanship, and a desire to be a sustainable and ethical fashion company, I’m excited to see what’s in store for Indian Bijou.
