Moms and Fair Trade

This weekend marks two important dates that are all about honoring and empowering others. You may already be celebrating Mother’s Day, but World Fair Trade Day might be an unknown to you. What does fair trade have to do with Mom? As I’ve found, Moms teach us about the principles of fair trade, whether we realize it or not. What exactly are those principles and how does Mom teach them to us? Today, I’m taking a closer look at each one to see how Moms inspire us to uphold the principles of fair trade. Continue Reading ›

May 2017 Affirmations

April has come and gone in a flash. Pushing my way through finals week, I feel as though I awoke and the month is gone. Although I did not get to write a lot of posts, I was inspired to see so many others committing to Fashion Revolution Day and asking about everything from #whomademyclothes to conscious consumerism. The Events that Inspired Me to Change

If you’re an ethical fashionista like me, you’re ready for April because of one specific reason. It’s not because you’re anticipating spring weather. It’s not because you’re one month closer to summer (although it is one month closer to May the Fourth). It’s because April is the month of Fashion Revolution Day. It’s not a day of celebration, but it is a day to advocate for changes in the fashion industry. Fashion Revolution Day is a day to give a voice to the garment workers who lost their lives in the Rana Plaza complex on April 24, 2013. What took so long for me to catch onto something others have known about for years? Continue Reading ›

April 2017 Affirmations

Spring carries many different meanings. Whether people enjoy spring with celebrations during the Vernal Equinox or chocolate bunnies or tree blossoms, spring is a time to renew. After advocating for and sharing my advice on how to advocate for and support causes, I feel empowered to take on this next month. I still have January, February, and March’s affirmations in my mind as I move forward, and it feels amazing to have incorporated these small steps to reach a larger picture of a more sustainable, balanced, and healthy lifestyle. On occasion, I have made missteps like neglecting time for myself, but I’ve enjoyed making these affirmations a part of my everyday life. Continue Reading ›

How to Support Gender Equality

Although sustainability is a cause I care deeply about and was the focus of my last blog post, there’s another cause I support that falls into the realm of sustainability and ethics. Just as I care about how we treat the environment, I care about how we treat one another. With March officially designated as Women’s History Month, you’ve no doubt noticed many people wearing red or knitted and crocheted pink hats to show solidarity for the equal treatment of women. While I agree that it’s incredibly important to empower women all over the world, not just in developing nations, it’s also important to realize that we cannot have equality for women without considering men too. Men and women are both placed in roles and feel pressure to fit specific stereotypes. Even though we are currently encouraging and inspiring people to reach beyond their gender roles, there are still some areas where we are making our way through the complicated labyrinth of gender and society. How can we break the mold of gender expectations? Here are few ideas and steps I’m going to start taking to show how I support gender equality: Continue Reading ›
